Mosquito season is officially in full swing and those pesky little bugs will stick around until roughly mid-September. Mosquitoes may be small insects but they bite and carry diseases. They are considered a nuisance to most people but can be dangerous as well.

What You Should Know About Mosquitoes

A mosquito needs still or slow moving water in order to develop. Female mosquitoes generally lay their eggs on the surface of water. Both male and female mosquitoes feed on nectar from flowers but the female will also feed on blood in order to produce eggs. Most mosquitoes will feed on the blood of animals that are found in their native habitat. Mosquitoes have been linked to spreading diseases such as malaria and Lyme disease. Both of these diseases can cause major health problems or even death so it is important that you take the necessary precautions to protect your family. Bug zappers and other such products have not been proven to eliminate or decrease the mosquito population in their area.

Control Mosquito Breeding Sites

Since mosquitoes generally breed in stagnant water, your first course of action to eliminating them would be to remove any sources of water around your home. Flower pots, wheelbarrows, water cans and toys should all be stored upside down so they do not collect water. Garbage bins and recycling bins should be covered and sealed to keep mosquitoes and other pests such as flies out.

Dress for Safety

Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn, so try to limit your outdoor activities during this time. The species of mosquito that is active during the day has not been found to carry West Nile virus. If you must be outside during their active times, wear loose fitting clothing that will protect your skin from mosquitoes as it’s easier for mosquitoes to bite through tight fitting clothing. When sleeping outdoors, use mosquito netting over your tent to avoid being bit. If you’re going to be out for a hike in the woods, wear long sleeve shirts and closed toed shoes with socks and spray yourself with an insect repellant.
