Carpenter Ant

Halton and Peel Carpenter Ant

Carpenter ants are well known in Canada for their wood-destroying capabilities. While they don’t eat wood, they chew the wooden structures in your home or business to build their nests. Over time, this can cause great damage. Truly Nolen Halton and Peel can help protect you against the destruction of carpenter ant colonies. With advanced pest control techniques in the industry, more effective methods including undetectable liquid products have been produced. These new techniques use the carpenter ants to introduce these products into the colony through natural contact and food exchange undetected, effectively controlling their population. With our Four Seasons Pest Program, you can be protected against carpenter ants among a variety of other pests.

Localized Facts & Advice:

  • Carpenter ants found indoors in the winter usually come from nests somewhere within the house. Ants found indoors during spring or summer could be invaders wandering in from outdoors or they may be foragers from a nest in the wall or ceiling.
  • Carpenter ants nest in the wood of residences in and around Halton and Peel. Such activities can damage the structural integrity of the house or structure.
  • Carpenter ants are most commonly found in wet wood made damp by water leaks, roof leaks, or around bath tubs, sinks, old windows, door frames, or behind dishwashers.
  • If your home and surrounding areas have any older trees, older fence lines, or older decks, your home is more susceptible to a carpenter ant infestation.

The keys to successful control of carpenter ants are to:

  • Immediately remove or repair any wet or rotting wood in your home.
  • Fix leaky roofs and plumbing leaks to avoid attracting carpenter ants.
  • Remove any clutter that creates shelter for carpenter ants to build their nests.
  • Trust your local Halton and Peel pest control professional to periodically monitor for the ants.

Bed Bug Control

Truly Nolen Halton and Peel Bed Bug Image

With over sixty of the Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the aerospace, pharmaceutical, electronic, computer and financial industries, Halton and Peel virtually hosts throngs of visitors each year just in business travel. In a territory with so many overnight visitors, Halton and Peel residents are advised to be on the lookout for bed bugs. These elusive little bloodsuckers travel on clothing, luggage, furniture and artwork. Bed bugs take advantage of any place humans sleep: hotels, apartments, retirement homes, vacation rentals, country clubs, colleges, universities and private homes.

Even though bed bugs pose no threat of disease to Halton and Peel residents, their bites are not fun. Bed bug bites create anxiety that can lead to sleep disorders and deprivation which over time can have long term consequences.

Bed Bug Facts

  • Bed bugs continue to be on the rise in Ontario and other provinces.
  • They are small, oval, flat, and reddish brown insects. They grow to the size of a drop of blood when they have fed on a person or pet and look more red than brown.
  • They are attracted to the warmth of our bodies and the carbon dioxide we exhale when we sleep.
  • They hide in your mattresses, curtains and almost anywhere they can find a crack or crevice and only come out at night.
  • Once they have a foothold in your bedroom, anything is fair game. They can be found on your furniture, the back of your pictures and even clinging to your walls.
  • Bed bug bites are small, red itchy bites that sometimes appear in a line anywhere your skin is exposed.

What do I do if I find bed bugs?

Before you panic and throw away all your bedding, beds and other furniture, call Truly Nolen Halton and Peel and find out how Truly Nolen’s I.P.M. (Integrated Pest Management) system can solve your problem. They will be happy to come out and perform a thorough bed bug inspection and explain your treatment options.

If your Truly Nolen inspection finds evidence of past and/or present infestations in your home our trained Technicians will:

  • Prep affected areas for treatment. This means bagging up any bedding or clothing where bed bugs have been found.
  • Remove all clutter, anything that has come in contact with anything that was infested with bed bugs, and then thoroughly clean the affected and surrounding areas.
  • Remove and clean linens, bedding and window treatments using hot water and extra hot dryer settings. Sanitation cycles on your washer are the most effective.
  • Some items, artwork, for example, should be cleaned and bagged for treatment off-site.

Truly Nolen’s Treatment Solutions

Our skilled technicians apply our patent pending high pressure misting system that drives treatment materials into seams and cracks where bed bugs hide. All mattresses and box springs will be treated, along with any affected window treatments and upholstered furniture.

In order to protect and prevent future re-infestations in your southern Ontario home, Truly Nolen recommends installing encasement systems for mattresses and box springs to seal out any future bed bugs. This will also seal in any existing bed bugs and they will die in a few weeks. Encasement systems are much less expensive than buying new beds.

Keeping an Eye Out to be sure they stay gone

Ten days after your home is treated it MUST be inspected again.

Even with Truly Nolen’s thorough I.P.M. system, bed bug re-infestations can occur, as new bed bugs can still enter your homes, apartments and condos through guests’ clothing, book bags, purses and luggage or even your laptop or backpack. Truly Nolen Halton and Peel is ready with products that prevent bed bug eggs from hatching and work hard to control adult bed bugs.

Let Truly Nolen Halton and Peel service technicians show you how to spot a possible re-infestation. Proactive awareness of a potential problem will help residents in Halton and Peel neighborhoods to identify early warning signs of further re-infestations.

Rodent Control

Halton and Peel Rodent Control Image

Halton and Peel houses Canada’s busiest airport and many major corporate headquarters, making it a great place for rodents to seek out in search of food and shelter. Surrounding areas are also susceptible to rodent infestations. Burlington is the city where people, nature and business meet, located near the center of the Golden Horseshoe, with a robust economy. Although an urban city, Burlington has ample woodlands full of trees and plants not to mention a whole world of insects and rodents. Rodents are usually found in buildings and congested, unsanitary areas that exist in an urban environment. Rats and mice are responsible for the transmission of many diseases through food contamination as well as their droppings. Their feeding habits are destructive, and their nesting behaviors including the tearing of insulation in walls and ceilings can harm the structural integrity of a building.

Things to Know:

  • Dry weeds in Halton and Peel can create hazardous conditions increasing the risk of fire and creating a habitat for rodents.
  • The main constraint of rats is they cannot live long without water, their diet must contain adequate amounts of liquids.
  • Mice and rats that reside near parks and trails in neighborhoods like Erindale, Clarkson and Lorne Park are known to eat seeds, nuts, and insects, as well as young birds and bird eggs.
  • Mice are the most common pest to infest your home or office. Mice are always happy to move indoors however they do infest our homes more often in the winter.

Each home is unique, with its own entry points and conditions that can make it ideal for a rodent infestation. The professionals at Truly Nolen Halton and Peel take the time to thoroughly inspect your home, identify any entry points, and implement measures and barriers to entry.

Bee & Wasp Control

Truly Halton and Peel Bee and Wasp Control Image

In 2006, Halton and Peel, a progressive commerce-driven city of the future began hosting free summer events in what is now the city’s Celebration Square. Combined with sporting events at Hershey Centre, and other outdoor venues, residents of Halton and Peel have a lot to buzz about.

In the warmer months, both residents and visitors may encounter the not so welcome buzz of bees and wasps. Although honeybees and other bees play a major role in our eco-system as pollinators and as nature’s pest controllers, bees and wasps strike fear in the hearts of almost everyone. Rational or not, your fears usually stem from the fact that bees and wasps can hurt you if you disturb them. A colony of yellow jackets or wasps can go viral and create serious suffering and life-threatening situations for your family and property. Bees and wasps in the wrong place at the wrong time can become serious pests. If you think you may have a bee or wasp infestation, Truly Nolen Halton and Peel can help. Contact us today for an inspection.

Whether you’re dealing with wasps or bees or some other stinging insects, it is important to know the actual variety of wasps and bees as they pose different problems and require different approaches for their control or elimination.

The Buzz on Bees and Wasps

  • Honeybees, bumblebees and other pollinators generally keep to their arduous work of collecting pollen for honey production. This is great since they are unlikely to bother you unless you bother them first.
  • Pollinators are stockier than predators, with round, furry bodies and flat legs for pollen collecting.
  • Pollinators possess the capacity to sting only once, usually to defend their hive’s honey. Once pollinators sting, they die.
  • Yellow jackets, wasps and hornets are predators, preying on flies, roaches and other insects for food.
  • Predators are more streamlined and shiny, built to stab their victims multiple times with their stingers if necessary.

Spider Control

Truly Nolen Halton and Peel Spider Control Image

Spiders are an important part of the ecosystem thanks to the role they play in regulating the populations of insects like flies and mosquitoes. That being said, you may not find them as welcome in the ecosystem of your home. Most spiders live outdoors, but occasionally they find a reason to move indoors, often favouring the quiet basements and garages of residential homes. If you have a spider infestation, it could be due to an overabundance of their food source, indicating an underlying infestation of another insect. Halton and Peel Truly Nolen Pest Control can provide an inspection and determine what measures would be appropriate and most effective for spider removal.

Spiders Commonly Found in Ontario

Most species of spiders are endemic to specific regions and climates. The following species are common in Ontario:

Wolf Spiders

These spiders like to hide in dark corners, such as cracks or holes in logs and piles of rubbish. They dwell in their burrows most of the time until they go out to hunt for their prey. A bite from one is not harmful, though it may hurt. Sealing up cracks around your house and cleaning up debris lying around outside can help to reduce their numbers.

Common House Spiders

These spiders get their name because of how often they are found in people’s homes. Houses provide perfect spots for spiders to build their webs, such as window corners, under furniture and room corners. If you want to control the number of these creatures in your home, vacuum often to clear away webs and egg sacs and seal off entry points to your home.

Cellar Spiders

Cellar spiders live in dark and untouched areas like attics, closets and basements. They will build their webs together in web communities, but when the going gets tough, they will eat each other. Keeping these places dry and closing off entry points should help to keep their populations in check.

Grass Spiders

These are a type of funnel spider that dwells outdoors and ambushes prey that comes too close to their webs. Unlike wolf spiders, their bite will not hurt, and they are actually unlikely to bite. They may be all over your lawn but will just help control other pests.

While the above spiders are not dangerous, sometimes you may run into a highly venomous spider like a brown recluse or black widow. When this happens, it is a good idea to try to nip a possible infestation in the bud. For a consultation about possible spider control measures, call Truly Nolen Pest Control.
