By: Drew Wind Submitted via Truly Nolen Email

I recently stayed at a motel which had bed bugs, and this motel was in the same city as Joanne's office in Bruce County (Port Elgin), and I found her office's number via Google. Upon possibly finding a bed bug in my home from this motel, I found this number and had many questions. Without meeting me, and being 4 hours away from each other, Joanne actually spent a good 45 minutes on the phone with me, helping me out with suggestions and even as far as allowing me to email a picture of this bug to identify it as a bed bug or not just on her own time and free. This service was actually comforting as can be, and I wanted to go out of my way now for her, as she did for me, even not meeting each other, or ever probably, to tell her company that Joanne, clearly is going above the call for customer service. This company is lucky to have someone with that knowledge and helpful to the public. Thank you.

Like much of the rest of Richmond Hill, Truly Nolen has been a continuous innovator, as well as an expert in our industry since 1938.

Infestations can happen at any time of year. Though potentially active during all seasons, carpenter ants really get busy in the spring. By contrast, rodents typically spend most of the summer feasting outdoors but start moving into homes during the fall when the weather outside turns colder and food becomes more scarce. At Truly Nolen, we have recognized patterns such as these for some time. That’s why we developed our Insect Control Program that addresses seasonal changes in behaviour proactively for year-round protection.

Carpenter Ant

Richmond Hill, ON Carpenter Ant

When you see an ant crawling across your kitchen floor, you can assume there’s a whole army at work somewhere inside your walls. While there are over 100 ant species in Canada, you’ll often find carpenter ants in and around Richmond Hill. These pests are quite large compared to other ants, and they’ll create a significant amount of damage to the structure of your home. At Truly Nolen Pest Control, we have the services required to get rid of the infestation.

What Does a Carpenter Ant Look Like?

Because carpenter ants are some of the largest species, between 6.5 mm and 13 mm in length, they’re often easy to identify. If you’re unsure whether that’s what you’re dealing with, some other characteristics of carpenter ants include:

  • Red, orange, yellow, brown and black colouring
  • Bent antennae
  • Some with wings, some without
  • Shorter back wings than front wings
  • A slimmer waistline with a single protrusion, or petiole

What Attracts Carpenter Ants?

Now that you know what you’re dealing with, you might wonder how they got into your Richmond Hill home. Unfortunately, even with the greatest preventative measures, carpenter ants seem to find their way inside. Tunnelling through wood, they begin on the exterior of your home and work their way to the inside. In most cases, they’re looking for wood that is damp or decaying, which makes it imperative you have any water damage cleaned up as soon as you notice it.

What are ants looking for? Why are they looking for a way into your home? Food! Any food you leave out on the counter or sitting in a garbage can overnight, is fair game to a carpenter ant. They prefer to eat meat and other foods that contain sugar and fat. Because their odour receptors are four or five times those of other insects, they’ll work hard to get into your home if they’re sure there’s food in there.

How Can Truly Nolen Help?

At Truly Nolen Pest Control in Richmond Hill, we’ll come up with a personalized plan to rid your home of carpenter ants. Our treatment plans are family-friendly and pet-friendly, offering solutions that will last. We begin with bait that attracts a colony member that will bring the insecticide back to the entire colony. We also have a treatment that targets the nesting site so everything is wiped out effectively.

As you can see, carpenter ants can create quite a problem if you don’t have them responsibly handled by professionals. Bed Bug Control

Truly Nolen Richmond Hill, ON Bed Bug Image

Truly Nolen of Richmond Hill provides bed bug control services that you can count on for reliable and quick results. Our team is knowledgeable about this common pest and we can help you return your home to its healthy and comfortable state.

Bed Bugs – The Basics

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that bite humans and feed on their blood. Typically, they do this during the night when the victim is sleeping. Then, they retreat to nearby dark spaces such as the cracks and crevices of a bed, hence the name.

The saliva of bed bugs helps to numb the victim’s skin, so it is hard to notice them, unlike mosquitoes, for example. In the morning, you may have small and easily overlooked bite marks. While bed bugs are not typically harmful except to people who are allergic to them, they are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Plus, their subtle behaviour means that infestations can go unnoticed for a long time.

Identifying Bed Bug Infestations

Adult bed bugs are only about 4.5 millimetres long and their presence can be difficult to notice. This can lead to infestations growing without being noticed. It is helpful to keep an eye out for any of the following signs:

  • Small, unexplained red marks on the skin, especially if different marks keep appearing
  • Small brown spots in bedding, furniture or other surfaces near the bed
  • An unusual, sweet odour near the bed
  • Eggs, exoskeletons or live insects

Don’t worry if you are unsure whether you have an infestation. The Truly Nolen team knows how to find infestations and can help determine if your Richmond Hill home is affected.

Handling Bed Bugs

Unfortunately, dealing with bed bugs by yourself is very challenging. These pests are just as likely to appear in clean homes as dirty ones. So, you cannot get rid of them by cleaning, no matter how deeply you do so. Additionally, their behaviour of hiding in small cracks and crevices helps them to avoid common pest treatments.

The good news, however, is that Truly Nolen of Richmond Hill is fully equipped to handle any bed bug problem. We may use a special misting tool that more effectively penetrates the places that bed bugs like to hide. Additionally, we use a treatment that is effective against eggs, juveniles and adults. Therefore, you can be confident that the treatment will deliver results. Whether you have found an extensive infestation or are just worried about one, contact us today. We’ll help address it quickly and effectively.

Rodent Control

Richmond Hill, ON Rodent Control Image

Although many people keep mice, rats and other rodents as pets, you will likely be less than enthusiastic if they enter your home uninvited. Out of 200 mammalian species in Canada, 68 are rodents. So, if you find them setting up shop in your home, you aren’t alone. Fortunately, Truly Nolen of Richmond Hill can help.

What You Need To Know About Mice and Rats

Mice and rats aren’t the only rodents that you will find around Canada. In fact, one of our most iconic mammals, the beaver, is in the family. However, when you find rodents living in your home or business, chances are that they are mice or rats.

These small rodents are highly skilled at getting into buildings and scavenging food. They eat almost everything but tend to go for grains first. Additionally, they can damage your home while setting up their nests.

Unfortunately, rodents can be major carriers of disease. They carry bacteria, viruses and parasites responsible for rickettsialpox, Lyme disease, leptospirosis and more. Perhaps most notoriously, rats can carry the bubonic plague. While you likely won’t be catching the latter, rodent-borne diseases are a serious issue.

How To Identify a Rodent Infestation

You may spot a rat or mouse running around your house. However, there are other signs to look for as well:

  • Small droppings that look like brown pieces of rice
  • Gnawing on the corners of food containers or parts of walls or cabinets
  • A dark, greasy substance around cracks and openings
  • Scratch marks
  • Nests made in hidden spots, especially in the dark
  • A foul odour, especially in the attic or walls
  • Tracks in or near foods

Don’t hesitate to call Truly Nolen if you notice any of these signs. We will investigate and address the issue.

How To Handle the Problem

The most important part of dealing with mice, rats and any other wildlife is to never handle them yourself. As mentioned above, they can be dangerous, especially when scared. Although you can lay down traps, you should avoid directly disturbing them or their nests. It is better to rely on the professionals at Truly Nolen to handle the problem for you.

We can help rid your Richmond Hill home of rodents quickly and effectively. Plus, we will provide preventative measures to stop them from coming back. This includes sealing up holes and crevices that could serve as entrances. By analyzing the infestation, we can better protect your home against future problems.

Additionally, you may be interested in our Four Seasons treatment program. This is a great way to keep your home or business safe from pests long-term.

Bee & Wasp Control

Truly Richmond Hill, ON Bee and Wasp Control Image

In Richmond Hill, we have a number of common insects and pests that infest homes, destroy trees, and get in the way of daily life. These include aphids, gypsy moths, tent caterpillars, and even common bugs such as bees and wasps. Finding a beehive or a wasp nest on your property can bring about feelings of panic, especially if you or someone you love is allergic to insect stings.

Fortunately, most bees and wasps are not dangerous to most people, but they can be a nuisance, and yes, their stings hurt! Here’s how these ubiquitous insects could be affecting your life — and when you should do something about it.

Bees, Wasps, and How They Affect Daily Life

If bees are buzzing around flowers across the yard, they may not pose a problem or an immediate threat to your safety; however, if you find a hive or a wasp nest located within or adjacent to your home, this is a cause for concern.

Even those who are not allergic to bees and wasps are still vulnerable to being stung multiple times by angry insects if a curious adult, child, or even pet disturbs the nest. If you don’t know what to do about an insect infestation, it is always better to let a professional assess the situation before probing the nest with an object or hitting it with a stick.

How We Can Help You

It may surprise you to know that there are many types of stinging insects in the Ontario area. You may be dealing with a hive full of common honeybees, or you may be plagued by a swarm of aggressive yellowjackets. It’s important to first schedule your inspection to know exactly what you’re dealing with.

When we inspect your home, we can safely assess your situation to determine the extent of the problem as well as what steps need to be taken to get your pests under control. Your Truly Nolan technician will strive to communicate with you every step of the way. He or she will communicate the following during the extermination process.

  • Determine what kind of pest you have
  • Tell you what steps need to be taken to eradicate the pests
  • Let you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after the treatment

Get in Touch

If you notice signs of bees or wasps in your home in Richmond Hill, don’t wait to act! Schedule an inspection with us today to formulate a plan to get rid of the insects before they do damage or cause harm to you and your family.

Spider Control

Truly Nolen Richmond Hill, ON Spider Control Image

Located in south-central York Region, Ontario, Canada, Richmond Hill is one of the most populous municipalities in the country. Not only is the city home to the largest telescope in Canada, the David Dunlap Observatory Telescope, but nearly 200,000 people call the thriving city home. The region is also home to a wide variety of common household pests, including wasps, ants and spiders. If you want to keep spiders out of your house, you can trust the experts at Truly Nolen in Richmond Hill to treat your home effectively so you don’t have to share a residence with the pests.

Signs You Have Spiders In Your Home

Spiders thrive in dark corners and unused spaces, and because females can lay hundreds of eggs at a time, a few spiders can quickly turn into a full-blown infestation without intervention. You may not know you are sharing your home with spiders because they tend to stay out of sight, but if you notice any of the following signs, it may be time to call in the experts at Truly Nolen in Richmond Hill.

  • Seeing more than a few spiders in a short period of time
  • Finding egg sacs throughout your home
  • Seeing webs in the house
  • Noticing more flying insects in and around your home

Steps We Take To Remove Spiders and Prevent Them From Returning

Prevention is the best defence against a spider infestation. We use high-quality chemicals to treat the exterior and interior or your home to deter spiders from entering. If you suspect you already have a spider infestation, we will pay special attention to the inside of the house and scour your space for webs and egg sacs, which we will thoroughly destroy. We will make sure to check out dark, unused spaces in your home such as the attic and basement so we are confident we don’t miss any hidden pests. Finally, we’ll spray your home with chemicals that are safe for pets and kids but deadly to spiders. These chemicals also work to keep new spiders from entering your home.

At Truly Nolen in Richmond Hill, we understand that you don’t want to share your home with spiders, whether they are poisonous or not. If you already have a spider infestation, we’ll work to resolve the issue instead of just getting rid of the pests that are visible. We can also provide routine pest control services to keep the pests from taking up residence, so contact us today to book an appointment.
